Sleep Training...Back To Square 1...

Gray did awesome sleeping on all of our trips this Holiday season. We got back to our house Monday afternoon to stay put for a little while. Monday night was miserable...Gray was up at 3:50 every 5-10 minutes crying and saying different things. But thankfully he would go back to sleep when I tucked him back in.

Tuesday night and Wednesday were easy and he slept through the night great.

Thursday he was up at 6:45am and we knew there was no way he could still be awake but there was no negotiating with him so Chris got up and showered and helped gray relax. Before Chris left for class he laid gray in bed next to me (which I figured he'd chat until I got up) next thing I know I am up at 8 and Gray slept until 9...SHEESH!

Friday at 3:50...I went in to him screaming trying to calm him down. Well that wasn't working so I left. The next thing I know we hear an extremely loud banging noise...it was quite scary and very startling actually. Now Gray has been in his Crib since November when we switched from the Toddler bed. Chris rushes out of bed and there is Gray crying at the door...HOLY CRAP! HE flipped over the side of his crib and landed on the toddler bed (much like he gets into his crib). Chris was not happy about that. HE finally settles down and around 4:50 he is up AGAIN! What in the world...he flipped out of his crib again and tried coming into our room to crawl into our bed! AHHHHH!!!No way...so I just decided I wanted to sleep so I took him out laid him on a pile of blankets on the floor and I slept with the fan on me on the couch. He was up at 8 playing quietly...I rested for another hour.

Saturday we decided we were going to HAVE to get rid of the crib and rearrange the whole room to make him feel like things had change and he was now a "big boy" and the Crib was now "sister's bed" We did lots of rearranging stuck the crib in the office for the baby's room and set up the toddler bed properly like a room. That afternoon we went to a few different stores...we bought door knob lock thingys...one's that are child proof and sometimes adult proof it seems. haha Then we also bought a fridge lock so he would stop getting into it and bringing us food. We were so busy running errands and changing the house we didn't let him have a nap. He slept maybe twice in the car at maybe 7 minutes each?

So come 8:30 Gray was exhausted! He was a little sad to go to bed but we did a little bedtime routine to distract him. Teeth brushing, family, prayers, some primary songs, and a book. We walked out and a few minutes later I heard him at the door. I went to open the door and he was sitting up in his bed. So I figure he tried to open the door and realized he couldn't open it so he got back in bed (YAY!). I went and laid him down turned on his night light and let him have his book. When I went to bed around 10 he was fast asleep.

At 1:10 am he was up crying....Chris went in quietly without saying anything gave him something to drink and told him he loved him. Gray fell back to sleep. Bummer he was back up again at 5:45 and I went in to do the same thing. But I turned on his night light and covered it a little and he laid back down and was up at 8:30. Not too shabby!

Sunday evening we were at Nana's so he had maybe a 25 minute nap on the drive up there and then we kept him awake. Around 8:30 he was out in the car for the drive home. We laid him in bed and he slept until Chris' alarm went off at 7am this morning. Hallelujah! 7am isn't necessarily my favorite time but hey at least he's not up in the middle of the night and Chris had to be up for an 8am class anyway.

We are crossing our fingers it continues to go well. Waking up once at night is one thing but every 5 minutes is ridiculous! Who knows this could just be the beginning and it could be getting worse. BUT I must say when we tried the toddler bed the first time he did NOT do this well. He is older and understands a little more now. We are saying our prayers and doing our best to still love our little booger when he's up screaming.

Sorry for all the long crazy stories.

The booger himself!!

  1. If you're looking for advice, I recommend "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child." He goes through a whole bunch of sleep problems and how to fix them. It's sure saved our nights, which you'll need with a newborn.

  2. Hey thanks Rachelle! It can't hurt to get some ideas. I've never read it but I've heard of it....my mom was always a big baby wise person so I've only really read that one. I will look into it....especially with a newborn coming! : )
